I had a sudden idea for what we can do about a rival for your character. I haven't come up with a name for him/her yet, but I think I know what the story behind him/her will be:
Basically, your rival is a member of the game's villainous team. Once you're at the pokemon laboratory in your hometown, this person comes in, declaring that they are a member of the evil team. They also declare that they will steal one of the professor's pokemon. The professor urges you to take a pokemon to combat the criminal, and naturally, your rival takes the starter with the type advantage. You duke it out, and hopefully win. Whether you win or not, your rival leaves the lab.
At a few times along the way, you'll meet your rival and battle like you do with rivals from other games. But later, perhaps in one of the evil team's bases of operation, you overhear some team members picking on your rival, criticizing their choice of pokemon. They make fun of him/her for not using tough pokemon, like the other team members. The purpose of this scene is to give character to the rival and separate them from the team, making them respect you more later. (like the rival from gen II)
Eventually, your rival becomes more of a rival and less of an enemy. They become your friend in the end and battle you, or perhaps team up with you, for the fun of it.
Does this sound like a good idea?
