    Your Rival

Post by Gelatino95 on Thu May 19, 2011 11:44 pm

I had a sudden idea for what we can do about a rival for your character. I haven't come up with a name for him/her yet, but I think I know what the story behind him/her will be:

Basically, your rival is a member of the game's villainous team. Once you're at the pokemon laboratory in your hometown, this person comes in, declaring that they are a member of the evil team. They also declare that they will steal one of the professor's pokemon. The professor urges you to take a pokemon to combat the criminal, and naturally, your rival takes the starter with the type advantage. You duke it out, and hopefully win. Whether you win or not, your rival leaves the lab.

At a few times along the way, you'll meet your rival and battle like you do with rivals from other games. But later, perhaps in one of the evil team's bases of operation, you overhear some team members picking on your rival, criticizing their choice of pokemon. They make fun of him/her for not using tough pokemon, like the other team members. The purpose of this scene is to give character to the rival and separate them from the team, making them respect you more later. (like the rival from gen II)

Eventually, your rival becomes more of a rival and less of an enemy. They become your friend in the end and battle you, or perhaps team up with you, for the fun of it.

Does this sound like a good idea?

I like it, however, it might have more depth if the rival is a relative of the Professor.

An interesting idea. That might work. We can have another scene where your rival is talking to the professor, who is ashamed of his relative's criminal ways.

I like the Idea ... maybe (and this is part of my story line idea) a "research assistant" or a baddie posing as a research assistant ... as one of two rivals so that all three starters are in play ... and the other being a friend/neighbor/local rival with a competitive history between them and you (I always liked the friendship theme to the pokemon games)

why don't you have the rival team up with you to fight the champion?

If your rival teams up with you, then the champion wouldn't be as much as a challenge. Besides, I think that's against the Pokemon League rules or something.

Sure, instead i think he could team you against the team's leader or just to learn the importance of good training (your good training) just like in HGSS.

I think it's best if the player can take care of everything in the game by themselves, but they can team up after the elite four when the story's over, like in HGSS.

Why don't make that the rival is the son/daugther of the Prof.? And the Professor wants him/her to follow his/her path but he/she doesn't so he/she joins the evil team?

I like the joining the evil team part. That's new, that's never happened before.

And you and your rival are friends, but he/she enters the bad team and he/she doesn't want to tell it to you, so he/she helps you sometimes to remain undercover.

I definitely like the idea of both the rival joining the evil team and being related to the professor. Maybe the rival(or secondary rival) could be the unused player character, like in R/S/E? I think that worked out well for those games. Anyway, I think reconciliation at the end is important. That was one of the best parts of Silver's story in G/S/C/HG/SS.
