Software Discussion
Discuss the software that can be used to make a Pokemon game out of the ideas we come up with in New Gen Pokemon.

Re: Software Discussion
Okay, let me get the stuff we've got so far:
RPG Maker XP (using Starter Kit linked to in other thread).
Pros: Actually a usable engine.
Cons: Actually need to buy it. For $29.99. Here.
Java
Pros: Someone may actually know how to use it!
Cons: That someone is still learning how to use it, and Pokemon's complex mechanics may be a little hard.
More will likely come as we discover them...

Re: Software Discussion
I have absolutely no Java experience. But I do have some gigantic books about Java that I haven't touched because they're too intimidating.
As for RPG maker XP, is there an attachment you can buy that makes it easier to make pokemon-related games? Some of the mechanics found in pokemon are far different from those in standard RPGs (such as the ability to capture the characters you use for battling, store them, and use them again later)

Re: Software Discussion
As I said in the other thread, someone made a Starter Pack that basically has all the Pokemon mechanics programmed in. I believe it's free for download.

Re: Software Discussion
The planning of the game will propably take a while anyway so I and anyone else who would like to program it (in java) would have time to get some experience propably...

Re: Software Discussion
I searched it on Google and found the pokemon starter kit for free. The only problem I'm faced with is purchasing RPG maker XP, as I've recently spent most of my money on my saxophone... but I'm sure I'll find a way.

Re: Software Discussion
I personally wouldn't buy anything until we have a decent amount of material to use. It would be awful to spend $30 on something that might only be used for a few months.

Re: Software Discussion
True, but it's also a good idea to get the software so we know specifically what information we'll need to come up with.Ferrety wrote:I personally wouldn't buy anything until we have a decent amount of material to use. But for now, we'll go with your idea.

Re: Software Discussion
Basically, we're limited to Gen. III moves, abilities, sprites etc. The Starter Kit basically includes the resources to make a Gen. III-style game.

Re: Software Discussion
So since it's limited to gen 3 mechanics, I guess we won't be able to split physical and special moves?

Re: Software Discussion
Don't think so. I'm not too familiar with the software though, so I could be wrong.

Re: Software Discussion
Awww man. I really wanted prehistoric Poke'mon.
Also, I just wanted to mention, that using sprites and stuff is okay, but I don't think GameFreak will be too happy about you using there music (I don't know though, you could ask if you want).

What do you mean? Of course there will be prehistoric pokemon.King Dedede wrote:Awww man. I really wanted prehistoric Poke'mon.

And as for the sprites and music, we're not selling the game to anybody, so we should be fine. I want to make my own music anyway.

Well for the music I found a beta version of the Pokemon B&W beta music, but I think we should make our own music.

Re: Software Discussion
I've been thinking more about RPG maker XP. I'm sure I could be able to get the money together for this at some point. We don't want to be stuck making the info for a game that we will never make, now do we? Also, I was considering downloading the free trial to see how effective this software really is. But I'll probably wait until band camp is over on Wednesday so I can make the most of my time.

Re: Software Discussion
I don't have the software yet, so I'm not certain that we'll be able to make a battle frontier. But I'm confident that we'll be able to do that.

Re: Software Discussion
Just downloaded the free trial for this thing. It's super complicated and I have no idea how to make the starter kit work. It'll definitely take a long time to learn.

don't worry, by the time we manage to create the 150pks+attacks+plot... i'm sure we will already know how does it work. If you want some help maybe we (the other people in this project)could download it too.

Re: Software Discussion
I also just got the free trial for RPG maker, if it helps. I've already made a fantasy rpg. anywho, I'm pretty sure I've convinced my dad to buy me the full version.

Re: Software Discussion
I got the starter kit to work, but there are tons of restrictions and we can't put in our own abilities or moves or anything like that. We just have to use what's given to us. If I understood the programming language, I'm sure I could do much more advanced work on it, but I can't.

Re: Software Discussion
I'm pretty sure you can edit Pokemon, though.
And I did say when I mentioned the Kit that it couldn't add moves or abilities.
EDIT: I think...

Re: Software Discussion
We probably shouldn't make a game for it. It's like making a movie out of a book: some things are impossible to recreate, so it's not even like the same thing. I don't want the game to be a fail, so let's just share our ideas instead.
